Soothing and treating the body with high heat is perhaps one of the oldest wellness modalities. The earliest versions of the modern day Finnish sauna are believed to be from 7000 BC and the regular use of sauna is extremely common today throughout Europe and in Finland in particular.
Infrared Sauna was invented in 1891. This method uses radiant heat to emit infrared light which is absorbed by the surface of the skin and does not depend on the heat in the air to heat the body. The benefit of this type of heat is that it is able to more quickly produce a sweat than traditional saunas, it penetrates the body deeply resulting in a fast and vigorous sweat being produced, and it can do this at a lower ambient temperature. The average ambient temperature in an infrared sauna is 104–140 °F compared to 158–194 °F in traditional saunas.
